sport-massageSports massage is an ideal therapy to treat athletes in order to enhance their performance. It is also used for recovery or restoration. Primarily, it helps to reduce stress and tension which builds up due to physical activity.  People in jobs demanding a lot of physical activities can also benefit and improve their performance from a sports massage.

This massage therapy is both deep and intense, and focuses on the over-used and stressed areas of the body. It recovers one from the load of rigorous training and reduces the risk of injury. It also aids sensitive areas of the body before they become a major problem. It is also a great warm-up to loosen muscles.

Sports massage is generally used for two purposes; pre and post event. The former helps to prepare the athlete and warm up the muscles and usually lasts for 60 minutes, whereas the latter alleviates muscle pain and provides relaxation after an event. There are three methods used during this massage. Firstly, effleurage which is done by using strokes at the start of  the massage. Secondly, petrissage or kneading, which is performed on the deeper tissues. Lastly, friction, which is used to break up adhesions, as well as other benefits.

Lactic acid build up occurs during strenuous exercise and can create several problems, such as cramps and pain. This massage can help reduce this build up and improve your recovery.
